We live in a world that offers constant distraction. Everything is competing for our attention. I’ve recently re-entered the competition as a fierce competitor. I’m fighting for my attention because I understand, more than ever before, that my attention is my most valuable currency. When you pay your attention to something, you receive that thing in which you paid for.
Pay your attention to a movie = You receive entertainment (and enlightenment if you’re watching a movie by Christopher Nolan)
Pay attention to gossip = You receive low energy
Pay attention to social media for too long = You receive an illusion (because it is not an honest reflection of real life for the most part)
Pay attention to the negative thoughts that pass by your mind = You receive suffering
We get what we pay for.
So, it’s important to pay attention to what you’re paying attention to.
Ask yourself, “What am I receiving in exchange for the attention that I am paying in this moment?” “Where am I paying most of my attention?”
When I pay my attention to the present moment, I receive overflowing joy, regardless of my circumstance.
When I pay my attention to the present moment, I receive the best songs to write and come up with the most creative ideas.
When I pay my attention to how much I am loved, I receive confidence and strength.
When I pay my attention to saying words that benefit my experience, I receive miracles on a consistent basis.
It’s normal to take much deserved breaks, unwind, relax and have fun but take assessment. Just like we do with money. How much do you spend? How much do you save? How much do you invest? Where are you investing it? Are you satisfied with the return on your investment? How much are you making? What is your spending budget?
Let’s honor our attention my friends, it’s expensive!
And let’s continue to sharpen our attention by meditating and taking the time to be still. If we continuing developing our focused attention, more can be accomplished in 1 or 2hrs than in an entire 24.
I've got signs around my room, I made a bright/huge vision board reminding me of where I'm going, scriptures on the walls reminding me of the truth, sometimes I even write reminders on my wrist, "be present." On my planner, above my to do list, I write notes like, "cheer yourself on! I believe in you!" "You can do hard things!" I've got a journal with my goals and a journal with positive affirmations about who I am, that I say out loud every day. I set alarms on my phone that say, "Remember to use your time wisely because you are worth the investment my love."
Do whatever you need to do to grab your own attention and focus it on the thoughts, the words, the truths and the feelings that add to your life because even our own minds lie to us and distract us.
Sometimes there is an entire story from the past replaying itself, deep within our subconscious and our ego convinces us that it is happening in the present. Then, we miss so much of the present moment, which is all we truly have.
Sometimes, we spend too much time talking about the past or someone else's life or the news and for a few hours we forget that we have such important purpose to fulfill, such high calling to do on this earth.
Sometimes, we forget who we are and what we came here to do.
Sometimes, I get so angry at my family for something that they did or said but then I quickly remind myself of death and the anger becomes a silly distraction from the precious time that I could be holding them inside of my arms and telling them, "I love you."
This week I just wanted to give you guys a short and mighty reminder to go get your attention back from whatever or whoever has a hold of it.
YOU are worth your own undivided and complete focuses attention.
