Because Of This Season

Hi Friends!

I’m exited to be back in this corner of the internet with you guys to share what’s on my heart.

Last Sunday, I read Psalm 142 and I was so encouraged. It would be pretty messed up if I didn't share it with you guys and kept it all to myself.

We’re going back to church this weekend ladies and gentleman.

Psalm 142 is titled, “You Are My Refuge.”

David wrote this while he was hiding in a cave.

I ask myself, “What would I be writing if I were the one hiding from danger in a cave?”

What would you be writing?

I know my paper would be drenched in tears if I was hiding in a cave because people wanted to murder me.

We aren’t in actual caves right now but we are all in need of refuge from something.

I may not know you personally but I know that you’ve got at least one issue in your life. That is the thrill of being human. We’ve always got something going on. It could be internal or external but life on earth is never in a state of complete perfection.

We’re going to take a look at what David wrote while in that cave.

“I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him.” (Verse 2)

Complaining in of itself is not a bad thing. It is who we complain to that makes the difference. If we pour out our complaint to God? That is actually encouraged and good for our mental/spiritual health.

The definition of cast : Throw forcefully in a specified direction.

To me, this means that when I have something in my heart that is weighing it down, the process of casting it to the Lord might involve some boogers, some tears and some complaints.

It’s bound to get ugly folks.

Venting to God is vital and healthy for our relationship with Him.

Escaping from God with other things to numb our feelings could be detrimental for our own health.

I do that with food sometimes. More often than I’d like to admit. I eat my feelings. It feels great in the moment and then I get constipated. Not fun. Pepto Bismol and Tums are dear friends of mine. I’m working on it. Send prayers.

What do you use to escape?

What I love about David is that he let it all out to God. His feelings. He didn’t hold anything back.

David had no idea what his next move was going to be, he was tired, yet he reminded himself of something that is always true.

“When my spirit faints within me, you know my way.”

(Verse 3A)

We could be discouraged because we’re trying to figure out the future or because we’re tired of our current circumstances.

Even then, God knows our way.

He knows what we need, He knows what the future holds and knows the answers to all of our questions. Due to His wisdom, we’re not loaded with everything all at once but if we seek Him with all of our heart, the portion in which God supplies to us will be more than enough for this exact season.

“Look to the right and see: There is none who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me; no one cares for my soul.” (Verse 4)

David’s current season : Hiding in a cave from people who want to murder him.

David’s future season : He will be King. There will be millions of places and people for him to take refuge in but because of this season?! He will know, for sure, that God, only God is his one true, solid, unfailing refuge.

“I cry to you, O Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” (Verse 5)

This connection, these moments of prayer that David is having is all he’s got in this season of his life.

He’s in a cave! He doesn’t have a palace, no one cares about him, he’s broke and yet he says that God is his portion.

The definition of portion : A part of a whole; an amount, section, or piece of something.

When we connect with God, spirit to spirit, tell Him how we really feel, we experience everything we need in this exact season.

“Bring me out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name! The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me.” (Verse 7)

That’s a bold statement to make in a cave!

It’s not the season in which we are in that dictates our boldness, our faith or our confidence.

It’s our focus.

Where have you set your eyes?

Where have you set your hope?

Is it in the next season of your life?

Let’s try, simply, talking to God in this season, about this season.

Let’s tell Him how we feel. Let’s vent. Let’s be real. The conversation will begin with our venting and it will end in hope and the transformation of our hearts.

If we do that, it will be, because of this season that we will bear bountiful fruit in our lifetime.

If your soil isn’t looking too good this season, don’t spend too much time worrying about the soil or the fruit that may or may not grow and just talk to God about it. Let that be your next step right now.

David talked to God in the cave and God led Him to the throne to reign as King.

I think it’s worth a try my friends.
